I’m excited to announce my upcoming book Sailing Close to the Clouds: Selected Worlds of Lucian of Samosata, arriving in 2027 from the University of Chicago Press!
Featuring eight new translations of Lucian's most world-bending works along with a reader-friendly introduction and short discussions, this volume tackles Lucian and the multiverse with appeal to layreaders, students, and seasoned scholars. We live in an age that is fascinated with alternative worlds, multi-dimensionality, constructs of “what if” and “what would have been.” The MCU and DCEU comic-book universes, The Matrix series, Stranger Things, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, 3 Body Problem. The list goes on and on. What do all of these have to do with Lucian of Samosata from the second century? And where do classical or traditional readings of Lucian and the Second Sophistic meet virtual reality, narrative theory, fan fiction? I’m looking forward to helping readers take their own journeys to find out.
